Oh the Weather Outside is Frightful

I am officially acclimatized to Ireland. I just sent an email to my mom (hi Mom!) saying how hot it was here the past couple of days, must be 80 degrees out there this morning. I just checked and it’s actually 73. (insert eye rolling here) Love being back in Texas clothes though; summer skirt, bare legs, and sleeveless blouse. I even left the house without a jacket this morning. My body finally kicked into vegetarian mode and I’m happily staring at a class of water with orange slices in it. It’s finally summer! And our 10 day forecast shows a slow daily drop to 70 for the weekend. Which I’m told is uncharacteristically hot for Ireland. See? God is trying to sucker me into thinking Ireland is good place to stay for a few years. Not that I mind.

In other news, today is July 12th, the annual Orange Parade Day, when they march thru Belfast to celebrate Protestant William of Orange’s victory over Catholic King James at the Battle of the Boyne. (Not to be confused with King James of the King James Bible fame, who was Protestant obviously) My co-worker Lewis is from Belfast (lovely boy, quintessential little brother material) and sent me a photo of a typical bonfire yesterday. It looks remarkably similar to the Aggie bonfires at Texas A+M, except that it has the Irish Tri-colour flag on top. When the flag burns they all cheer. And the best part? It’s set a mere 300 meters (just shy of 1000 feet) from an Irish Republican, and therefore Catholic, neighbourhood. Why does this remind me of the Klan burning crosses on lawns? And why is it front page news that the police are expecting it to erupt in violence? You’d think after what just happened in London, someone would question the idea of partaking in a religious demonstration which traditionally leads to violence.

What else is happening? Not much. Gearing up for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, which I will wait in line for at midnight Friday. I’ve never waited in line for a book before, much less a children’s book. But there is a pub next door to the bookstore and that’s good enough for me. I just re-read the Order of the Phoenix and have decided that I want to play Bellitrix Lestrange in the movie. I had wanted to be Tonks, it would be cool to see the special effects on your own head, but after this time thru the book, I realized that Bellitrix has the best lines of anyone in the book. Granted I look nothing like her, but a girl can dream right? So Friday while Dublin is trying to hook up and hang out, I’ll be curled up with a Guinness and Harry. Sigh… that’s my idea of a dream date!
