Dinner Theatre
So I'm walking out of the office yesterday on my way to Italian class. I leave on the dot of 6 so I can arrive just before 7, when class begins. I wander down to the shop to buy a sandwich for the road (class goes from 7-9) and just as I approach the shop, my bus pulls up on the other side of the street. Damn. So I catch the next one, 10 minutes wait, no big deal right? I get on the bus and some as yet undistinguished variety of Asian woman is chatting on her cell phone, in undistinguished variety of Asian language. The entire trip. She wasn't loud by any means, but there weren't many people on the bus so we could all hear her. Which seemed to be more than the man in front of her could handle. So he loudly says "Shut up!" which she promptly ignores. As is her right. There were other seats up front, not to mention an entire level of seating above us. I'm now watching the little drama unfold in front of me while having a tastey BLT. He proceeds to comment to his seatmate and then puts his hands over his ears like a little kid. Rocks back and forth a little bit and then turns around to give her a dirty look. I munch on my sandwich wondering if he's going to explode and A- hit her or B-grab the phone and chuck it out the window. If he does either of these, I wonder, what should I do? So we move up the street and she chats on. He does a 3 line chant of "Shut Up" and comments to his seatmate again, who is looking a little less than comfortable. I begin the 2nd half of my sandwich. The rocking ensues and it's starting to look like a full fledged tantrum when we stop at her stop, which also happens to be his stop. (I notice when he stands that the entire right half of his back is completely soaked, as if someone nailed him with a very tidy water balloon. I like to pretend that this is why he was so cranky.) This happens to be the most popular stop on the route and I'm usually the only one left after everyone piles off. The girls exits and the man is behind her, huffing, lightly stamping his foot, looking to the other passengers for support. Solidarity is hard to find these days, apparantly. So as he approaches the door, he stops, effectively stopping everyone in the queue from exiting as well, and he complains to the driver about people being allowed to use their cell phones on the bus. It's a a public place. She was inconsiderate. She should have thought of others. Can't something be done about this? All while 20+ people are waiting behind him to get off the bus and catch their connections.
